Facilitators: Dr. Raiza Dottin and Dr. Janelle Voegele
This 60-minute workshop will provide participants with information on four key areas (Multicultural Education, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Culturally Relevant Education, and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy) of equity in teaching. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore the strength of each framework and then apply insights from each towards specific strategies for teaching.
Raiza Dottin has a doctorate in Learning and Leading with a concentration in Neuroeducation. She has a background in K-8 education as well as post-secondary and higher education. Raiza's prior professional work includes a diverse background in program management and support within research, public, and medical universities. Through her professional and educational work, she has established a strong track record of educational leadership, working with programs to create the student-centered environments and active teaching and learning spaces that form the core of her education beliefs. In her current research, Raiza strives to facilitate lifelong learning in higher education through the development of student-centered environments, with a focus on innovative assessment practices that examine critical thinking through experiential learning.
Janelle Voegele has a doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus on Postsecondary, Adult and Continuing Education. She has over twenty years experience in postsecondary education, and has taught in a wide range of classroom, community-based and online environments - large and small, introductory and advanced level. She has won two student-nominated teaching awards while at PSU, and has presented widely on engaging students in deep and sustained learning. Her current research includes pedagogical assumptions and student learning experiences in partially online courses, the role of academic portfolios in faculty scholarship and professional development, and perceptions of scholarship in the context of institutional change.
