“Culturally sustaining pedagogy seeks to perpetuate and foster—to sustain—linguistic, literate, and cultural pluralism as part of the democratic project of schooling” (Paris, Django 2012). What does it look like to create learning environments that treat the diversity of student experience, knowledge, and contribution as assets rather than deficits? How can we develop learning spaces with and for the students who arrive in our classrooms? In this experiential workshop, we will explore the benefits of and strategies around creating culturally sustaining classrooms that honor and make connections with our students’ lived experiences and cultural backgrounds.
